Statement of Intent
For my music video, I chose the song 'Moon River’ by Frank Ocean because of its slow, emotional and reflective tone. The song creates a calm but slightly melancholic atmosphere, which best fits my narrative about healing after a toxic relationship. My music video follows my main character experiencing a heartbreak and recovering by choosing herself; encouraging a teenage or young adult audience to emotionally grow and always choose self love.
At the start of the video, I use close up shots of her phone and face as she reads old messages. This makes the emotions feel personal and allows the audience to clearly see her vulnerability whilst also creating a connection to her as they might relate. Furthermore, flashbacks are shown using over the shoulder shots to allow the audience to feel involved in their heated argument, along with slightly shaky camera work to reflect the instability and toxicity in the relationship.
These scenes are crosscut with clips of another couple in a healthy, happy relationship. I filmed these moments using smooth camera work and movements to show the balance in their relationship. This contrast helps highlight what a healthy and supportive couple should look like emphasising to the audience that they will find the right person.
As the song progresses, she blocks her ex, symbolising her self growth and removing the negativity from her life. I then use establishing shots and long shots of her walking alone and sitting on a park bench to represent a turning point, where she begins to reflect on herself and how she deserves better. The editing also slows down to match the rhythm of the song and show her emotional healing.
At the end of the music video, I show her starting a diary, where she reinforces the message of self worth, you can finally see the happiness in her eyes as she reconnects with herself, her loved ones and her community. This links to the theme of ‘one small step towards improving the community’ by promoting self respect and a positive mental health. By showing one person choosing herself, the video encourages the audience to make healthier choices, which can lead to a stronger and more supportive community.
