Coursework Preliminary Exercise
Initial Tasks: Planning
1) Write a 100 word statement of intent explaining what you are going to make for your preliminary exercise
For my preliminary exercise, I’m making a short 50-second music video to Frank Ocean’s song: Moon River. It’s a cut-down version of my main idea, showing how you should always choose yourself. I’m starting with a diegetic speech where someone asks, “Love or lust?” and the reply sets up the meaning. Then the music comes in, and we follow one main character after a breakup. They’re shown alone at first, but then start to focus on self-love and small positive actions. I’ll use simple shots like close-ups, shot/reverse shot and a quick montage to show this.
2) Write a script for your preliminary exercise on your blog. This needs to include stage directions AND dialogue.
Preliminary Exercise Script – Moon River (50s)
FADE IN:
EXT. PARK – DAY (OVERCAST)
(Close-up: Maryam sits on a park bench, casual clothes, looking distracted. A VOICE (GUY) is heard off-camera.)
GUY (O.S.)
Love or lust?
MARYAM
(looks up, slightly confused)
What?
GUY (O.S.)
Which one would you pick if you could choose — love or lust?
MARYAM
(pause, quietly)
…Love.
(Shot/reverse shot establishes diegetic conversation. The soft notes of Frank Ocean’s Moon River fade in under her reply.)
0:06 – 0:15
WIDE SHOT – PARK BENCH:
Maryam sits in a hoodie, looking down at her phone buzzing with notifications and “No Caller ID” calls.
CLOSE-UP – PHONE SCREEN:
Old messages appear on screen. She hesitates, then locks the phone and sets it aside.
(Music swells slightly, reflecting temptation vs. choice of self-love.)
0:16 – 0:30
INT. BEDROOM – DAY:
Medium shot: Maryam lies on her bed, staring into space.
CUT TO – MIRROR SHOT:
Close-up of her reflection. She breathes deeply, then gives herself a small, tentative smile.
0:31 – 0:45
MONTAGE – VARIOUS LOCATIONS:
Maryam helping an older neighbour carry shopping bags.
Maryam sitting in a café with a tea, reading, appearing calmer and more at peace.
0:46 – 0:50
EXT. PARK – GOLDEN HOUR:
Wide shot: Maryam sits back on the same bench, this time in warm golden light.
CLOSE-UP:
She sips from a takeaway drink, faint smile on her face as the music swells.
(Full-circle moment, symbolising growth.)
FADE OUT.
3) Casting: Who will be in your preliminary exercise music video?
My friends
4) Plan your locations: Where you will film your preliminary exercise?
I'm going to film it at a bedroom, at the park, a cafe
5) Write your shot list: every shot you plan to film. This needs to be far MORE shots than you will actually use in the final edited version - plan extra angles, close-ups, long shots and more. This is for a narrative film but the layout will be the same.
Close-up shot, medium close-up shot, low angle, high angle, establishing shot, long shot, extreme close-up shot, over-the-shoulder shot, eye-level shot
